Georgia Fitnessgram Assessment Information

What is Fitnessgram?

Fitnessgram is the state-mandated fitness assessment in which grades students get assessed in the 5 health-related fitness components; aerobic capacity (PACER test), muscular strength (Pushups; grades 3-5 only), muscular endurance (Curlups; grades 4 & 5 only), flexibility (Sit & Reach; grades 4&5 only), and body composition (height and weight; all grades tested, but only 3rd-5th reported to the state).  Students in grades K-2 participate on a practice basis, where they learn the testing protocols and procedures and practice taking the Pacer test and height and weight portion of the test.  Students in grades 3-5 have scores recorded and submitted to the Cooper Institute, where their data is tracked until their senior year in high school.

Who does what?

In K-2, students only participate in the Pacer test, and the height and weight portion of the Fitnessgram assessment.  This is mainly done to introduce testing protocols and procedures to the students.  Scores are recorded locally, but not submitted to the state.  In 3rd grade, students begin to practice for the pushups portion of the assessment.  Scores are not recorded, but proper form is taught for the perfect pushup.  Pacer and height and weight are recorded and submitted to the state.  In 4th and 5th grades, students take the pushups (Muscular Strength), curlups (Muscular Endurance), and sit and reach (Flexibility) portion of the assessment.  All scores in the 5 health-related fitness components are submitted to the state.

When is the test taken?

We typically run through a practice test in the middle of October.  This is done to go over all testing protocols and to give the students in grades 3-5 a chance to learn how to set goals and learn how to set up a practice program to get their scores higher for the spring.  In grades K-2, we teach the students about pacing during this time and as well as how starting fast during the PACER test, isn't the best strategy.  This is also re-taught in upper grades.  In the Spring, the official test is given usually around the middle of March for scores to be submitted in April.  Unless students provide a letter from a doctor or parent/guardian, students are required to participate in all state-mandated testing sections for the Fitnessgram Assessment.

What do the students wear for the Assessment?

Students are required to wear sneakers or some kind of athletic shoe, and athletic/comfortable clothing.  Students not wearing sneakers will not be allowed to participate as their scores could be negatively affected, as well raise possible safety concerns.  Please make sure your child is wearing proper clothing during the week(s) of their Fitnessgram testing to ensure their best performance.
